daily planting

“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant.”

- Robert Louis Stevenson

It is easy to get caught up in the desire for overnight success, especially with all of the examples of it on social media—if you didn’t already know this, overnight success on social media is either fake or took years to build up and only appears to be overnight.

I was reminded of this quote this morning as I sat in our home office and looked at the whiteboard I wrote on almost two years ago. It has PRST at the very top and branches from it in different ways I wanted to grow that brand.

Lifestyle brand.
Media company.
Services.
Physical location.
Community.

Each branch has subcategories for what falls under the categories, and at first glance, it would appear that I have not made progress toward the vision on the whiteboard.

But, upon further review, I can see the seeds that have been planted each day; some are still underground, some still need to be planted, but some are actually beginning to sprout. If I were only to focus on the macro of the board, I’d fail to see the progress that has been made over the last couple of years–thankfully, I zoomed in and was able to see that the daily planting is beginning to grow where it can actually be seen.

Our whiteboard not only allows me to see the progress being made, but also shows the power of writing down your goals. I rarely work in our home office anymore, so it’s not as if I’m looking at the board daily to remind me of where I’m going–it doesn’t serve as a daily reminder to me, but rather just a record of what I said I wanted to do.

The writing on the whiteboard also serves as a reminder that our goals don’t always manifest in the ways we think they will; many of the seeds that are beginning to grow are not a part of the PRST brand. Last year, I decided to move any services I provide outside of RLS Wealth to my personal brand, not the PRST brand. The PRST brand remains, but will be a creative collective of the lifestyle brand and media company.

I’m much closer to the vision of the whiteboard being a reality when I look at the seeds planted each day and realize they are still being planted and growing.

It’s important not to lose sight of the work you are doing along your Pursuit; you have to know where you’re going, but if you don’t take time to reflect on the work you are currently doing, how the work of the past is taking shape, and enjoy the process you may become frustrated with what may look like or even feel like a lack of progress.

Focus on the seeds you are planting and trust the harvest will be there when you need it.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

JC
