don’t wait

Years ago, I heard someone say that most people finally make a change when the suffering of not changing is greater than the discomfort of the change.

I was reminded of this when listening to Brianna Wiest and Rick Rubin on the Tetragrammaton podcast the other day. Brianna said something similar but then followed up explaining that when you wait for the suffering of not changing to outweigh the discomfort of change, you are FORCED into the change.

Rarely is being forced into anything a good way to make a transition.

An easy example of this can be seen with our health…

I’m sure we all know someone, maybe we are that someone, who consistently received lab results suggesting a change was needed in lifestyle to lose weight, improve cholesterol levels, improve pre-diabetic metrics, etc. but never made any changes because getting up earlier, changing diet, or finding a new group of friends to hang with was too uncomfortable. Since changes were never made, their health continued to decline until a heart attack, stroke, diabetes diagnosis, or some other shock FORCED them into changing their habits because an alternative, death, had been brought closer to them.

Don’t wait to make a change you know you should make.

And definitely don’t wait to make that change if your heart and intuition call you to the change.

No one wants to be forced into doing anything, even if it’s better for you in the long run. The discomfort of change is momentary and lives in your head—it’s rarely as bad as you think it will be.

Don’t wait until the suffering of not changing becomes greater than the discomfort of the change; if you do, you might be too late.
