collective suffering
I had coffee with a friend of mine last week and he shared an important concept he identified and began to consciously opt out of…
Collective suffering.
He shared how once he realized people around him, either in person or in his social media networks, were all participating in a unified collective suffering he decided he wasn’t going to participate; in a non-arrogant way, he realized he didn’t need to agree to suffer with the others, especially since he really had no reason to suffer.
Once he made this decision to opt out of the collective suffering, he noticed opportunities within his business for growth, while others complained about the state of the market, and most importantly, he noticed how much happier he was.
Collective suffering is not new—we know how misery loves company.
But, for some reason, I loved how he framed this phenomenon of people getting together to complain and focus on negativity when in reality, they are surrounded by an abundance of positivity.
It’s easy to fall into suffering with others—how many memes have you seen in the last couple of weeks that talked about how long of a month January was or how terrible the beginning of the year has been?
Posting memes and joining in the collective suffering of January of 2025 might not seem like a big deal, but the suffering compounds and can keep you in it for the remainder of the year and beyond causing you to miss out on opportunities, seeing the abundance around you, and leading to your unhappiness.
Just because someone else has chosen to focus on one or two areas to define their perspective of the world doesn’t mean you have to follow them.
You can opt of their collective suffering and define your own experience.
