the omens
This morning I woke up and saw on Instagram that J. Cole has dropped a new single on his blog. Fridays are when new music is released, but it’s usually done on streaming platforms like Apple Music and Spotify.
But J. Cole dropped his song on his blog—and it’s 🔥.
I’m a big fan of how he has been controlling his distribution of not only this new song but a series of recorded interviews about his journey and the release of old albums on his Inevitable website. Last year I didn’t think twice about paying $10 to have access to the series of conversations to hear all of the behind-the-scenes of his come-up in hip-hop and his ascension to one of the top artists in the game—he’s #2 for me…Kendrick, Cole, and Tupac sit at the top for me; those conversations provided a lot of inspiration for me as I think about where I’m heading.
As I caught up on the posts on his blog while listening to the new song, I got excited about the idea of launching my own blog—a place to share things that I find interesting:
Videos.
Podcasts.
Songs.
Pictures.
Articles.
A new blog could also be a place where I could drop my new songs when they are ready, share videos when I post them to YouTube, and have a home for a new idea I’ve had for the last month—posting voice memos I record whenever I have a thought or idea that I think is worth remembering.
This new blog will be informal, inconsistent, and unpredictable—there won’t be a cadence to when I post to it, the content I share will be random, and there may or may not be a lot of explanation about what I’m sharing. It will basically be a public filing cabinet of content I enjoy and think might help others as they pursue their authentic lives.
The Daily Notes will not be replaced by this new blog—those have a different purpose and deserve their own home.
The Periodicals will not be replaced by this new blog—those have a different purpose and also deserve their own home.
The new blog will complement the Daily Notes and Periodicals, not replace them.
And the new blog needs a name…
J. Cole calls his blog The Algorithm.
My new blog will be called The Omens.
The name came to me quickly when I started thinking about the idea of the blog this morning; it’s a nod to the advice Santiago received in The Alchemist to always follow the omens and respect to the omens that show up in my life, often through the content I envision I’ll be sharing in future posts—it felt right and I didn't think twice about it.
So, welcome to The Omens
And here’s the new J. Cole song that gave me the idea…
Keep pursuing,
JC
