Finding Presence Through Intentional Simplification
I shared in one of the first Daily Notes that my word for 2023 is “simplify” and I’m happy to say three months into the new year and I’ve been holding true to my pursuit of simplification and have found greater presence in all areas of my life.
Going from nonstop action to slow-moving with intent is a tough leap to make. Instead of trying to go from 100 to zero (Drake voice, “real quick”), find a few areas in your life to slow down and simplify the task at hand.
Going for a walk. Don’t listen to a podcast. don’t make phone calls. Don’t catch up on emails. No multitasking. Just walk and observe the nature around you.
Making dinner. No television shows. No music. No reading in between checking the food or making the side. Just cook and enjoy the process, the smells, and the taste tests.
Relaxing with family. Don’t text message. Don’t squeeze on more work. No scrolling through social media. Just be in the moment with those you care about doing whatever the group is doing.
Simplify your life by just doing the one thing in front of you. You will enjoy the moments more and when you are with others, they will appreciate your presence. It becomes easier to simplify your experiences and the desire to simplify will spill over into other areas of your life.
Not only does simplification become contagious but it also allows your mind to slow down and not be in a constant state of stimulation. I’ve experienced clearer thoughts, more creativity, and a greater appreciation for the present moment.
Just because we are encouraged to do all of the things, to hustle, and to be always “on” it doesn’t mean you have to live by that narrative. Let others create a blurred life while you focus your energy on living your authentic life, the people you love, and the things that matter the most to you.
See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,
