Dig A Little Deeper
“You got to dig a little deeper
Find out who you are
You got to dig a little deeper
It really ain't that far
When you find out who you are
You'll find out what you need
Blue skies and sunshine guaranteed
You got to dig (dig)
You got to dig (dig)”-Jenifer Lewis as Mama Odie
As you know, each morning I wake up not knowing what the Daily Note will be, and each morning the Universe brings me the message for me to write about–some days it comes in my meditation, other days it is guidance to seek a quote, and days like today it comes from random places.
Silas has been watching Disney’s The Princess and The Frog a lot recently, and this morning he was singing the song “Dig A Little Deeper”; I wasn’t paying much attention to the words of the song, but there was something about hearing his sweet voice say, “you got to dig a little deeper to find out who you are.” It caught my attention, made me smile, and I immediately thought, “That’s right Silas—just dig a little deeper.”
I’m ecstatic that whether he realizes it or not, the song is teaching him an important lesson, and because he was singing it I believe it will burn the message into his subconscious–and Disney is notorious for sharing these types of important messages if you’re present enough to catch them–go watch Soul, Inside Out, Encanto, or Onward (and there are plenty of others).
I looked up the rest of the lyrics and Mama Odie, the character singing the song, is my kind of character…not only is she sharing that we only need to dig deeper to find out who we really are, but she drops the great gem immediately after…
“When you find out who you are, you’ll find out what you need.”
Earlier this week, I gave my “are you living someone else’s life?” talk for the first time; in this talk, I talk about how one of the ways you can discover who is penning the story of your life is to ask “why”. The answer rarely is found with the first “why”, and as Mama Odie suggests, you have to dig a little deeper to find out your truth. Eventually, after asking “why” enough and digging deep enough for the answers, you will discover your authentic Self and exactly what you need to live your authentic life.
If only I were as clever as the writers at Disney to write a song that shares the same message I spoke for 40 minutes about. So, if my message is hitting with you, maybe go check out some Disney movies and watch them with the intention of catching these valuable lessons that are missed by the majority of the people who watch.
Don’t go through your life carrying a feeling of discontentment…if you feel like there is something missing or called to experience something different, dig a little deeper and find out why that feeling is there and whether or not you should explore it further.
Digging deeper can expose some fears, traumas, or other hidden emotions you might want to avoid, but I encourage you to work through whatever you might discover because on the other side of whatever unknown you find in the digging is your authentic Self and as Mama Odie shares, when you find YOU, you’ll find exactly what you need.
See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,
JC
