love yourz

I was listening to a J. Cole mix earlier this week and one of my favorite songs came on, Love Yourz. Every time I hear this song, I get goosebumps. The one time I saw J. Cole perform it live with Ang, Roman, and Leo I had tears in my eyes as I listened to the lyrics and looked at my family there with me.

I just love the song.

I’m pretty sure there’s an old Note that references this song, but it’s time to revisit a few of my favorite parts of it that remind us to love the life we have:

“For what's money without happiness?
Or hard times without the people you love?
Though I'm not sure what's 'bout to happen next
I ask for strength from the Lord (Man) up above
'Cause I been strong so far, but I can feel my grip loosenin'
Quick, do somethin' before you lose it for good, get it back and use it for good
And touch the people how you did like before
I'm tired of livin' with demons 'cause they always invitin' more”

“Livin' with nothin' to lose, I hope one day you hear me
Always gon' be a bigger house somewhere, but man, feel me
Long as the people in that place love you dearly
Always gon' be a whip that's better than the one you got
Always gon' be some clothes that's fresher than the ones you rock
Always gon' be a girl that's badder out there on the tours
But you ain't never gon' be happy 'til you love yours”

“No such thing as a life that's better than yours
No such thing as a life that's better than yours (Love yours)
No such thing as a life that's better than yours
No such thing, no such thing”

Even if you are in the process of discovering your authentic life, you should still love the life you currently have; I’ve written about the importance of gratitude as the foundation of finding abundance and joy—and interestingly enough, this quote popped up in my Open app this morning,

“The root of joy is gratefulness…it is not joy that makes us grateful; it is gratitude that makes us joyful.”

- David Steindl-Rast

You can pursue a life of more purpose, fulfillment, and joy while being thankful for and loving the life you are seeking to evolve away from.
