a rising tide

One of my favorite quotes is “a rising tide lifts all boats.”

I’ve lived by this my entire life, although I never actually heard anyone say it until I was probably fifteen years into my career.

We witnessed an example of the abundant mindset that fuels a rising tide on Super Bowl Sunday–you probably didn’t notice it though. It didn’t happen during the game, although I’m sure there are some great clips and soundbites from both the Eagles and the Chiefs that exhibit abundance. The example I’m thinking of happened during Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show.

Yes, as a Kendrick fan, I loved the halftime show.
I loved it for its creativity.
I loved it for its storytelling.
I loved it for its showmanship.
I loved it for its messaging.
I loved it for its authenticity.
I loved it for the conversations it's sparked.
I loved it for the music.

I also loved it for a clip I saw yesterday of an up-and-coming rapper named AzChike, who is a featured artist on one of the songs Kendrick performed, Peekabo.

The clip starts with Chike and his family watching Kendrick’s performance and their excitement as they hear the music for Peekaboo come on, knowing the world was about to hear some of the song he was a part of. Naturally, everyone is excited, dancing, and smiling. What they didn’t know was that Kendrick was about to perform AzChike’s verse as well–not only was the world going to hear the song, but they also were going to hear his words performed by Kendrick.

The family went crazy.

I’m smiling now as I write this because I can only imagine the feeling Az Chike experienced when he saw one of the greatest rappers to ever perform his own lyrics during the Superbowl halftime show.

Kendrick didn’t have to perform AzChike’s verse. Most artists would have stuck to their own writing and left out the featured artist’s verse. But Kendrick, who often exhibits his abundance on stage with other artists, introduced the world to AzChike’s words.

His abundance brought awareness to Chike, lifting his boat.

His abundance also brought a tremendous boost of confidence and self-belief to AzChike, lifting his boat even higher than the awareness.

Again, Kendrick didn’t have to do that.

But he did.

And we all have the opportunity, maybe not on the stage of the Super Bowl, to favor abundance and help bring rising tides so we can lift up others.

Don’t miss even the smallest opportunity to lift someone else up, you’ll never regret it and the Universe has a way of remembering you the next time you need a little lift from someone else.
