becoming who you might be

“When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.”

- Lao Tzu

When I came across this quote this morning, thanks to the Open meditation and mindfulness app, I knew it was meant for me–it immediately sent off a light bulb.

As I share my evolution as an advisor and individual with the world, hoping to help the right people who need my help to find me, I have spent a lot of time thinking about who I want to become (i.e. Rick Rubin of finance), how I want people to see me (life planner/coach vs. financial advisor), what I enjoy doing the most.

While it’s important to know where I want to go, I can’t help but wonder, after reading Lao Tzu’s quote, if I’m getting in the way by thinking too much about what I am. Would an approach more like Michael Singer’s Surrender Experiment be better suited for this next phase of my life?

Point my Self in the direction I believe my future Self is in, continue to focus on the activities that I enjoy the most and that I happen to be best at, and then surrender to the flow of life.

Our identity, what we “are” or want to be, is a tough thing to give up. But holding onto these identities so tightly might make us miss the opportunity to become who we really were meant to be.

I don’t have the answer (yet) on how to strike that ever-important vision of who we want to become and not get in the way of what is meant to be, but I do believe there is a balance to be found and I’m going to lean on the alignment of my spirit, mind, and body to help me figure it out.

For now, I’ll just look for when I’m focusing too much on who I am or want to be and re-center my focus on surrendering to the flow of life and doing what I enjoy the most and feels right.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

JC
