euthymia

This morning, I was introduced to the word “euthymia,” thanks to Ryan Holiday’s Daily Stoic. This is my fourth or fifth year of reading the book each morning, and this is the first time I’ve ever highlighted anything from today’s passage–it was time.

The modern definition of euthymia is “a normal, tranquil mental state of mind or mood”; it is most often used about someone battling bipolar disorder.

However, there is another definition that I prefer over the modern version.

Seneca used “euthymia” to describe

“Believing in yourself and trusting that you are on the right path, and not being in doubt by following the myriad footpaths of those wandering in every direction.”

How can you become more euthymic?

I know one way, and I’m certain it is not the only way…aligning your spirit, mind, and body to find that confidence in your Self and your path (aka Pursuit). When you know who you truly are and that your Pursuit is taking you toward the authentic life you are called to live, it becomes much easier to tune out the noise of the outside world.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

JC
