Matching The Physical Experience With Internal
People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experience on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.”
- Joseph Campbell
Joseph Campbell is known for introducing us to The Hero’s Journey, which whether you are aware of it or not, you are very familiar with it—there is a good chance your favorite movie follows the journey.
Campbell wrote The Hero With A Thousand Faces, which is a dense book examining the concept of the Hero’s Journey, and while I pride my Self in being an avid reader, I have yet to complete this book. Thankfully, Campbell sat down with PBS in the 80’s for an extensive interview with Bill Moyers, which was turned into a book called The Power Of The Myth–this is where the quote for today’s note came from.
I don’t recommend attempting to tackle The Hero With A Thousand Faces because there are plenty of resources to understand The Hero’s Journey and begin to identify with it in your own journey–you are the hero in your story! I would recommend The Power Of The Myth, which is the transcript of the interview between Campbell and Moyer–you can even find the interview on YouTube.
As you begin or continue to explore ideas like The Hero’s Journey and learn from individuals like Campbell, you will begin to discover how much control you actually have over your life, which I hope is an exciting realization–you have the ability to experience life in the way that most aligns with who you are.
See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,
