be careful what you wish for
“Be careful what you wish for, not because you’ll get it but because you’ll be turned into the thing that can get it. It’s not a process where you just ask for something and it magically appears, it’s a process that breaks you down and rebuilds you into the right tool for the job.”
- Jed McKenna
This quote was shared in a community that I am a part of, and when I initially read it (I haven’t read McKenna’s second book where this came from—the first one was great), I had “negative” feelings—like, “Ooh. That can be scary.”
Being turned into the thing that can get it done made me think about the story of King Midas, who wished to have the power to turn everything he touched into gold. Midas quickly learned the downfall of his wish—EVERYTHING he touched turned to gold…his food, his water, and even his daughter.
The life you desire or the version of your Self you want to become may manifest in a way different than you imagine and result in a life or version of your Self that leads to misery.
As exciting as it is to think about growing into a “better” version of our Selves, we may not fully understand who we must be turned into for that version of our Self to exist.
So, I think this is a great reminder to be careful of what we wish for and to understand the “why” behind our wishes.
Now, this quote could also work in the opposite of Midas.
It is just as possible that we could be turned into a truly better version of our Self to become the person we want to be.
We just don’t know.
I never promised your Pursuit of our authentic life would be easy 😀.
For me, the takeaway from this quote is to be aware of why I am pursuing the life I am, to make sure the intentions are pure, come from a place of love, and are authentic to me, and to maintain my alignment of spirit, mind, and body to stay connected to the Divine that created me and follow its lead.
If I can do that, I like my chances of being on the positive side of McKenna’s quote.
See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,
JC
