life is precious

I almost didn’t write a Note today.

I didn’t feel up to it when I woke up, and truthfully still don’t.

But, I wanted to use today’s Note to remind you how precious life is.

Last night I picked Roman up from a friend's house and as soon as he got in, he shared with me how his best friend’s older brother had just wrecked his car and that the passenger had died.

I was overcome with emotions—I immediately teared up.

A high school senior with so much life ahead of him–a four-star football recruit with a scholarship to play in college—was gone.

His parents receiving that phone call.

The life of the driver, also a high school senior, was ruined.

After processing the news and thinking of everyone involved, I naturally thought about “what if…” and how I can’t even fathom receiving a phone call like that. I can usually shake negative thoughts quickly, but it stayed with me all night.

I just talked to my coach last week about how I know I’m at the stage where I have to start letting go of the boys more and giving them the freedom to grow and learn on their own. Then last night happened, and I wanted to never let them leave the house again.

I know that’s not reasonable or even healthy, but when tragedy hits close, it makes you overact.

Instead of wrapping the boys up in bubble rap and never letting them leave the house, last night’s tragedy will serve as a reminder to make the time we do have together matter—let silly things go, don’t get annoyed or angry at habits and behavior that aren’t really that bad, always to make sure everyone knows how loved they are, never go to bed angry, always say I love you before hanging up, and always to enjoy each other.

We know life is precious—we often forget it though.

And it really sucks that nights like last night have to happen to remind us.
