a surprise J. Cole drop
“I proceed with caution, and I’m not flossing
Unlike some, I’m not defined by my fortune
I’m defined by rhymes, though I’m in my prime
There was times that I was down cuz I’d thought I’d lost it
But, no, low and behold, as my poetry grows
I give all glory to God as the Story unfolds
And the gray hairs that grow on my head will show
Ain’t no time limit to get it you ain’t never too old
So keep hold of your dreams, no matter how it seems
If you don’t water your lawn, well man then it won’t stay green”- J. Cole
To my surprise, J. Cole dropped a new single on his blog last night and you know I had to listen to it as soon as I saw it. As the song played, this section of the song stood out to me.
I’ve bolded a few of my favorite parts.
I love what J. Cole is doing right now; last year he launched a website where he’s posting recorded conversations, short written posts, and now music. He’s taking back control of his distribution and his relationship with his most loyal fans. I really hope this song being dropped is taking us back to the blog era for hip-hop—mainly because when that era was popular, I wasn’t aware of it and I missed out on it.
What I love about the idea of the return of the blog era for hip-hop is that to me it represents independence, authenticity, freedom, and genuine connections.
I’m also so inspired this morning by J. Cole that he’s got me thinking about launching a “blog” on my website where I can share videos, podcasts, books, and articles that I find helpful in my Pursuit of my authentic life with a short commentary on whatever it is that I’m sharing. I also recently had an idea to start recording voice notes of ideas, thoughts, quotes, etc. on my phone, but I wasn’t sure where I would post them—I knew the LifeDesign+ podcast was not the home for these notes.
But, a blog is!
I’ll probably get to work on this blog over the weekend—I move fast when I’m inspired and the idea aligns with my authentic life. It’ll be just another way for me to catalog helpful resources and ideas but done publicly.
I joked with a couple of friends this morning that my website is going to become my public brain—available for anyone seeking to connect with their authentic Self and life.
I want to end with my favorite part of the J. Cole song as a reminder,
“If you don’t water your lawn, well man then it won’t stay green.”
