what comes before ability

David Senra is the host of one of my favorite podcasts, Founders. The premise of his podcast is simple–he is obsessed with reading biographies and autobiographies of the world’s greatest leaders and entrepreneurs, and each episode is him sharing what he took away from one of these books.

It’s fascinating to learn from so many greats who have followed a vision only they could see and changed the world in many ways. I love the podcast because it saves me from having to read a bunch of documentaries and helps funnel me towards individuals I think I can learn from.

There is a very common thing amongst the leaders and entrepreneurs Senra studies—they all lived an authentic life.

Usually, Senra is behind the mic sharing valuable lessons learned from his readings, but he recently appeared on Modern Wisdom, another one of my favorite podcasts, and while I’m only about halfway through the episode, I wanted to share a comment he made early in the conversation that immediately made me smile.

He and the show host, Chris Williamson, were talking about Elon Musk, specifically the early days of Space X, when Musk was in his 30s.

Senra highlighted that Musk, along with most great leaders and entrepreneurs, has an abundance of self-belief—I mean, Musk decided he was going to concur space with no background in anything related to space exploration. He decided to launch SpaceX because he BELIEVED he could do it.

Senra said that with the people he has studied,

“belief comes before ability.”

And that quote made me smile.

If you are serious about pursuing your authentic life, you will most certainly need to believe in your Self and your vision before anyone else will—you will have to believe you can do something you’ve never done before because your authentic life is something you’ve never lived before.

Senra’s quote is just another way of saying one of my favorite Bob Proctor quotes, “when you believe it, you will see it” which is the reverse of what most people say.

So, please don’t forget that your belief comes before your ability.

Believe that.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

JC
