images that elicit emotion
Last night, I went to J. Cole’s Forest Hills Anniversary concert in Madison Square Gardens.
Okay, I didn’t actually go to New York City—I checked to see if I could make it happen, but Ang had tickets to the Justin Timberlake concert in Indianapolis, so I had to be home for the boys. But thanks to technology, I could livestream the concert on my iPad.
It wasn’t the same experience, but I could feel the energy of a sold-out MSG and the excitement J. Cole felt performing his album (and a few other songs).
As I type this the day after, I am still getting goosebumps about the concert—I always get goosebumps when watching a concert, even via streaming, when I think about being on stage in front of an audience of people who took time out of their day, spent their hard-earned dollars, and are singing every song word-for-word.
For me, it’s the word-for-word singing.
When someone knows every word to a song, that song and the artist emotionally connect with them somehow—the song makes them happy.
As a music lover, I know how it makes me feel, and one day, I want to be on the other side of that relationship.
I want to create something from my heart that makes such an impact on someone else that they travel to Fishers, Indiana, in five years for the Keep Pursuing event I’ll be putting on. Or, if they can’t make it to Fishers, maybe I’ll have the opportunity to do a mini tour, and they can catch me at one of the 5-7 cities I stop at.
Watching the concert last night elicited tons of excitement within me—check my IG stories and you can see that.
I’ll carry that energy and excitement with me the next couple of days, but I have a way to keep that energy and inspiration with me for longer—long enough to have the Keep Pursuing event in five years and to have another J.Cole moment (the first was in my first Keep Pursuing series talk last year) on a bigger stage.
This is a screenshot I took of J.Cole performing Love Yourz, one of the best songs for those of us on our Pursuits.
This image and I have others like it, and they happen to be of J.Cole, put me in an energetic state I can’t explain–it’s not a state of feeling like I’ve already experienced being on a stage like this. The best attempt at explaining how I feel when I look at that image is that I feel called to experience that feeling. I’m being pulled towards it. I’m supposed to be on a stage like that, but I’m not sure why yet–and I don’t need to know why. I’ll figure that out once it’s happened.
Here's the beginning of my talk last year, where I talk about J. Cole at Rolling Loud and a similar image--it should be right at that moment.
I share this because I know this image, which I’m printing on my desk and in my podcast studio, is more than a screenshot for me–it elicits too much emotion just to be a picture.
Having a picture of what it is you are pursuing is a great complement to the writing, visualization, and belief you are doing to bring whatever that is to you—find a picture of something or someone that elicits emotions that are supportive of your Pursuit and keep that image around you!
